Joseph Glasco in Studio

Joseph Glasco maintained his primary studio in a loft on The Strand in Galveston, Texas, where he worked prolifically from the early 1970s until his death in 1996. He also worked from a 19th century Victorian house he purchased on Sealy Street in Galveston's historic district. It was in these spaces that Glasco produced the large-scale abstract paintings and collaged canvases that defined the final and most innovative chapter of his career. Galveston's isolation from the New York art world suited him — he worked on his own terms, receiving a steady stream of visitors including Julian Schnabel and George Condo, while continuing to push his work in bold new directions until the very end of his life.
