Academic Foundations: The Art Students League
"I made a startling discovery... it occurred to me one day as I was drawing that you really don't have to look up at something and then try to repeat it on paper." — Joseph Glasco
The New York Formative Years (1949)
Upon his arrival in New York City in 1949, Joseph Glasco immersed himself in the rigorous environment of the Art Students League of New York. This period served as the bridge between his early studies in Mexico and Los Angeles and his rapid ascent within the New York School.
Principal Instructor: Glasco studied under the renowned German-American draughtsman and painter George Grosz. Under Grosz’s tutelage, Glasco refined the precise, stylized draughtsmanship that would soon catch the attention of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
The League Circle: During this time, the League was a nexus for the burgeoning Abstract Expressionist movement. Glasco’s presence at the institution coincided with a generation of artists—including Jackson Pollock and Alfonso Ossorio—who would become his lifelong intellectual and artistic peers.

(Art Students League)
(Joseph Glasco)
